As part of the UCL Institute of Education First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme’s ongoing commitment to a premium pupil experience, we have once again partnered with University of Exeter historian, Dr Catriona Pennell, to conduct the second evaluation analysis of young people who participated in the tours in spring 2017.

One hundred years after the start of the Battle of the Somme, students will be amongest those who will keep vigil at Westminster Abbey to remember those who fought in the Somme Offensive. As they keep watch, we will hear their story, listen to their voices and the voices of their families; the voices of those who worked behind the lines and in the war effort at home; and to German voices.


Battlefield Tours feature on BBC Newsround

In May 2016, we ran a special battlefield tour which was accompanied by reporter Martin Dougan and a film crew from BBC Newsround. During that tour, Martin and the crew worked with the students to record their experiences, thoughts and feelings as they visited the former Somme battlefields and other sites on the Western Front. These recordings will feature in a series of special daily broadcasts on Newsround in the week leading up to 1st July 2016.

Commemorating the Battle of Jutland May 2016

May 2016 will see the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland. Many events will be taking place to commemorate the battle and a variety of resources and material are available online to teachers.

In a recent survey carried out by Dr Catriona Pennell, Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Exeter, participating pupils rated our battlefield tours very highly. They said that the chance to see the battlefields, monuments and cemeteries on the Western Front for themselves had helped them gain a more profound understanding of the First World War and its continuing significance.


Successful start to spring tours 2016

Last weekend, we made a very successful start to our 2016 spring tour season with five coaches, carrying representatives from 48 schools visiting the battlefields.
