Legacy110 projects reach 15 million people!



On Wednesday 7th November, we held our Annual Legacy110 Awards event at the Tower of London. This event showcases some of the very best First World War Centenary school projects completed in 2018. We also announced an update to the total communty reach of the Legacy110 projects to date.


Amiens 2018 International Student Tour

Students from across the UK joined pupils from across the globe on the former battlefields of the Western Front to commemorate the Battle of Amiens (8-11 August 1918), as part of the UCL’s First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme. The International Student Programme, which has been developed by UCL Institute of Education, as part of the national commemorations of the First World War, will tell the story of the Battle of Amiens which one of the key elements of the Hundred Days Offensive and the path to the Armistice in November 1918.

As part of the UCL Institute of Education First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme’s ongoing commitment to a premium pupil experience, we have once again partnered with University of Exeter historian, Dr Catriona Pennell, to conduct the second evaluation analysis of young people who participated in the tours in spring 2017.

Secondary school students from across England gathered at the House of Lords on Tuesday 21st November 2017 for our annual awards ceremony to celebrate First World War Legacy projects.

In March 2018 Manchester City Council, the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and UCL's First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme will be collaborating to commemorate what is known as the ‘Battle of Manchester Hill’ which took place on the 21st March 1918.

We are very excited to be running our inaugural English Literature themed First World War Battlefield Tour this autumn. This extends the programmes' reach to offer free literature themed tours to all secondary and middle schools in England who have yet to take up one of the free government-funded centenary tours.

In March 2017, Teaching History published an article which looks at how one teacher, Claire McKay, from Henry Cort Community College in Hampshire used her battlefield tour experience to develop a whole-school programme called 'Active Remembrance'.

Over the past few weekends, we have made a very successful start to our 2017 spring tour season, with representatives from schools from across the country visiting the battlefields. One group was also joined for a day by Alison Rose, the British Ambassador to Belgium.
