Extensive plans for 2016

2016 promises to be another busy and exciting year for the Programme as we look to be build upon the excellent year we had in 2015, which resulted in us receiving another prestigious national award.

This month will be spent preparing for the spring tour season which is going to be very busy with with more than 300 schools from across the country set to travel to the battlefields of the Western Front. The team are busy finalising itineraries and creating new resources and materials with which to engage students and inspire teachers. Tours in 2016 will see groups visiting battlefield sites which have an association with events of 100 years ago, most notably on the Somme but also at Fromelles.

On 22nd January we will hold the first of our 2016 CPD events and have an exciting series of sessions planned included keynote speaker, Taff Gillingham.

We are currently developing two new online CPD modules in partnership with the Imperial War Museums to go with the two which were created in 2015. These interactive modules will support teacher development and introduce some new ideas supporting the teaching of the First World War both in and outside the classroom.

Legacy110, our post tour community project, really took off in 2015 and now many schools across the country are busy working on projects to commemorate the First World War and share these within their communities. Many have already completed these and these can be seen on our Legacy110 map. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Britannica Digital Learning who generously support this aspect of the progamme.

Specialist Leaders…

Summer 2015 saw the formal launch of our ‘teacher ambassador’ scheme. We now have 10 teachers working with us as part of our specialist leaders programme and we already have had a great deal of interest from teachers who wish to be part of our second cohort which will begin recruiting in the summer term.

Somme100 commemorations...

In the summer, we are very much looking forward to playing a central role in the national Somme commemorations and schools who have been part of the programme will be taking part in the national commemorative event at Westminster Abbey, before taking part in the CWGC and British Legions' 141 days initiative in the autumn.

Lots to look forward to and a busy year ahead!
